This was a wonderful opportunity to work on a project that would not be easily available in NZ, namely an 18th Century church in Reading, England.

The challenge was to obtain approvals to convert the Church into a residential home. To do this I had liaise with the Historic Trust. They insisted that the beautiful glass windows, characteristic south porch, old clock tower, wall memorials and plagues be retained. The unusual part of the commission included discussions with Conservation Authorities on ‘how to preserve the right of bats to roost in the belfry’.

My drawings show the design concept that the Developer adopted. Unfortunately, I returned to NZ before the conversion was completed, but kept a ‘watching brief’ from home.

‘Donna not only displayed great interior design skills, but also perseverance and initiative when dealing with the local government on a number of complex issues.  I doubt that many Interior Designers would have the complete skill set that Donna used to design a beautiful conversion within strict constraints.’
